The homes of VIRGINIA ENGEL

"Miss Los Angeles" of 1940 and "Miss Streamline" at the San Francisco Golden Gate Exposition of that same year, Virginia Engels only achieved uncredited chorus girl and background assignments in a screen career that nevertheless lasted into the 1950s when she was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. Life continued on a downward spiral for the former beauty queen who allegedly suffered weekly beatings by her second husband, parking lot attendant Charles Brown.

The domestic terror culminated on the night of June 8, 1954, when Virginia stabbed her attacking husband to death in their Hollywood Apartment. A jury eventually found her to have acted in self defense and she was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter.

The scene of the tragedy as it appears today:

5200 Marathon St., Los Angeles, CA
Virginia Engel's landlady found the former chorus girl dead from meningitis in her small apartment here on December 5, 1956.
